Gretchen Bercaw grew up in a family of artists. Her mom was educated to teach art and her father was a retail advertising executive with a knack for design, drawing, and photography. She would often accompany her father to photo shoots for retail catalogs at the Cleveland photography studios of Ed Nano and Iann Hutchins. Nano was the photographer for Stouffers Foods, Halle Bros., and other major corporate and retail clients in Northeast Ohio.
After spending a career exploration day working side by side with Nano in his studio and darkroom, she became intrigued by the art and the science of photography. She bought her first Nikon as a high school senior and the same year was awarded a Gold Key and became a portfolio finalist in the National Scholastic Art competition. She dabbled in photography, sculpture and ceramics as a fine art major during her first years of college, but eventually settled on sports marketing and administration.
She had a successful career marketing and managing major distance running, skiing, triathlon, and multi-sport events for many years while living in Ohio, Chicago, and Wisconsin. She directed the marketing of many of these events by hiring professional photographers to document them and the athletes for media publications and promotional materials.
She spent the past ten years traveling the globe as an international sales manager for a construction material manufacturer. In late 2011, she purchased her first digital Nikon camera, began shooting again, and documenting many of her international travels and her friends and family.
Nowadays, she and her husband are raising two fantastic kids who also enjoy picking up a camera and shooting great pictures alongside her. They also help to corral animals and people during shoots.
Bercaw also owns BLT (Bucket List Travel) Getaways, an adventure and leisure travel firm.
